Biography
Alec Baulding is a Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt under Romero Cavalcanti, being one of the most accomplished grapplers produced by the legendary Alliance Jiu Jitsu co-founder on American soil.
Alec Jerrod Baulding is a well-known competitor and coach. He was born in April of 1989 and has competed as a black belt since being promoted in 2015. He has competed for most of his career out of the venerable Alliance Jiu-Jitsu Academy, which continues to produce world-level talent today. Alliance was co-founded by Cavalcanti, who’s operated schools in both Brazil and in the United States since receiving his black belt from Rolls Gracie in 1982. As far as lineages go in Jiu-Jitsu, it doesn’t get much more pure than Alec Baulding’s.
Since discovering his passion for competing as a colored belt, Alec picked up multiple acclaimed titles on his path to black belt. Including Pan Ams & World Champion. Alec became known in the jiujitsu community for being a hard-nosed competitor, battling his way through stacked divisions to get the win.
Alec is still a notable competitor to this day. Through his competition schedule, he maintains a passion for teaching, and is notably active in creating & promoting instructional content. Most of which, is specialized for smaller athletes, who share his shorter, stockier build.
Baulding spent the large majority of his time training under the Alliance flag. However, unexpectedly in 2012 he switched camps to team Lloyd Irvin, training at their headquarters in Maryland. The spell at TLI was short-lived as Alec returned to Alliance in April 2013. Where he later received his black belt from Romero “Jacare” Cavalcanti.
Alec Baulding's Backround
Alec was born and raised in Atlanta – Georgia, where he originally started his martial arts journey with Taekwondo. He went as far as competing as an orange belt in Taekwondo, before he stumbled upon the name “Brazilian JiuJitsu” while scouring the internet for the most effective martial art. He was 15 at the time. As there weren’t many gyms in his area, he joined Robert Shaw’s academy. Shaw, also known as the “Bull” was Romero Cavalcanti “Jacaré” Cavalcanti’s first American black belt, and when his academy closed down 1 year into Alec’s training, Baulding decided to join the Alliance Jiu Jitsu Academy headquarters, also in Atlanta.
Random Fact about Alec
Baulding was given the nickname “Cofrinho” by the Brazilians, which roughly translates to “piggy bank”. In loving reference to both his size, and his tendency to let his gi pants sag too low.
